Wow, these all look so great!

Clarence "Kelly" Johnson is an aeronautical legend. Everyone knows he designed brilliant aircraft like the P-38, U-2, SR-71 , and at least 40 other designs, including the Stealth Bomber at the famous "Skunk Works".
What I learned while reading "Kelly-More than my share of it all", was that he lived in the Wind Tunnel at the University of Michigan while a student in the 1930's. He spent so much time in the Wind Tunnel that he was allowed to rent it from the University and consult for other companies.
As soon as he received permission to use it, he approached Studebaker and they asked him to work on the Silver Pierce Arrow.
"We knew all the tricks on how to reduce drag caused by air resistance. We found, for instance, that the big ugly headlamps on Studebaker cars were eating up 16 percent of the power the engine developed at 65 miles an hour. We managed to get them shaped into the fenders. We worked on a lot of other problems and ran a lot of tests."
After approaching Lockheed Martin in 1932 for a position at the company they told they they had nothing at the time but if he could go to school for one more year they might have something for him. He went back to school in Michigan for his graduate degree and studied supercharging and boundary layer control.  He also did Wind Tunnel work for Studebaker on their Indy 500 entries. what a legacy!
